Mercury

Budha's birth story is one of Vedic mythology's more delicate ones: born to Chandra (Moon) and Tara, wife of Brihaspati (Jupiter), his conception was outside the bounds of dharma as the texts elsewhere define it. Yet the child born from that union was, by every account, extraordinarily intelligent and composed — and even Brihaspati, on seeing him, accepted and raised him. Classical commentary reads this less as an endorsement of the circumstances than as a statement about Budha's own nature: discriminative intelligence (buddhi) that can arise from, and make sense of, complicated situations.

Mercury is neither emotional like the Moon nor self-assertive like the Sun; it operates through reasoning, discrimination, and communication — the faculty that names, sorts, and relays rather than the faculty that feels or wills. This is the basis for Wednesday, Budhvaar, as a day favorable to learning, negotiation, and commerce, and for Mercury's traditional rulership over speech, calculation, and trade.

Astronomically, Budha never strays far from the Sun, which classical astrology reads as more than a curiosity: a Mercury too close to the Sun is termed combust, its clarity said to be overwhelmed by solar ego; positioned at a healthier remove, Mercury is read as the Sun's effective messenger, translating the soul's deeper purpose into practical, communicable terms.

Mercury rules two signs, Gemini and Virgo, and unusually among the grahas takes its exaltation and one of its own signs in the same sign — Virgo — a doubling classical texts treat as marking just how squarely analytical, detail-oriented intelligence sits within Mercury's own nature. It is debilitated in Pisces, where the boundary-dissolving, non-linear quality of that sign runs against Mercury's need for precision and distinction.

As karaka of speech and commerce, a well-placed Mercury is traditionally associated with eloquence, mathematical aptitude, and business acumen — traders, writers, and teachers are its classical professions. In medical astrology, Mercury governs the nervous system and skin, the body's own communication interfaces, and its remedies — wearing emerald, observing periods of silence — are aimed at settling an overactive or scattered mental faculty rather than sharpening a dull one.
