"The houses are known as Body, Wealth, Siblings, Happiness, Children, Enemies, Spouse, Death, Dharma, Karma, Gains, and Losses respectively."

In Vedic astrology, the Houses or Bhavas (भाव) represent twelve divisions of the celestial sphere, measured from the Ascendant outward. While planets and signs continuously move through the zodiac, houses provide the stable, personal framework through which cosmic energies manifest in specific life areas.

Each house governs distinct aspects of human experience — from physical appearance and material wealth to relationships, career, and spiritual liberation. The interplay between signs (what), planets (how), and houses (where) creates the unique tapestry of an individual's destiny.

The House System VELS Uses

Different mathematical approaches exist for dividing the celestial sphere into houses — here is exactly which one powers your chart

Whole Sign Houses (Rashi System)

Every chart VELS computes uses the Whole Sign house system — the entire sign occupied by the Ascendant becomes the 1st house in full, the next sign becomes the 2nd house, and so on, regardless of the Ascendant's exact degree within its sign. This is the oldest attested house system in both Hellenistic and Vedic astrology, and it remains the standard within traditional Parashari practice.

This differs from degree-based systems like Equal House (which starts each 30° house exactly at the Ascendant's degree) or Western systems like Placidus and Koch (which divide time rather than space, and can produce unequal house sizes). Whole Sign houses keep sign and house perfectly aligned, preserving the direct symbolic link between a planet's sign and its house — the reason it has remained the default across the Parashari tradition this platform is built on.

Other systems (Placidus, Koch, Porphyry, Campanus, and degree-based Equal House) exist and are used in various astrological traditions — VELS covers Whole Sign specifically because it is what our engine actually computes for your chart, not a general survey of every method in use elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

Houses are anchored to the Ascendant (Lagna), the exact zodiac degree rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth — and that degree changes roughly one full sign every two hours. An error of even a few minutes in birth time can shift the Ascendant into a neighboring sign, which relabels every single house in the chart. This is why precise birth time matters more for house-based reading than almost any other factor.
