- Identify the sign to be timed and locate its ruling planet's current Rashi (Scorpio and Aquarius each have two classical co-rulers — Mars/Ketu and Saturn/Rahu respectively — resolved via a separate placement-and-strength procedure before counting).
- Classify the sign being timed as forward-counting (Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius) or backward-counting (Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces).
- Count the signs from the timed Rashi to its lord's Rashi in the appropriate direction, treating the timed Rashi itself as "1".
- Subtract 1 from that count to get the dasha's length in years (a ruler sitting in its own sign is a fixed exception: automatic 12 years).
- Repeat for each of the 12 signs to build the full life sequence, starting from the Lagna.
