The 27 Nakshatras
The lunar mansions that give Vedic astrology its finer resolution — 27 distinct 13°20' arcs of the zodiac, each with its own deity, symbol, and classical Tamil verse.
The Divine Architecture of Nakshatras
A Nakshatra ("that which does not decay") is one of 27 fixed lunar mansions the Moon moves through on its roughly 27.3-day orbit — one nakshatra per day, in rotation. Where the 12 zodiac signs describe a person's broad character, each 13°20' Nakshatra arc adds a much finer layer: a specific presiding deity, a ruling planet, a symbol, and a set of classical associations (gana, guna, yoni, body part, gemstone) that sharpen exactly which flavor of a sign's energy is in play.
Each Nakshatra further divides into 4 Padas (quarters) of 3°20' each — 108 padas in total, mapping exactly onto the 108 possible placements of the Navamsa (D9) chart, the divisional chart most closely tied to marriage and dharma. Classical Tamil astrology (Natchathira Sastra) treats these same 27 stars — Natchathirangal — as a parallel, equally detailed tradition, with its own named verses for each star's native, some of which appear alongside the Sanskrit facts on each page below.
The Sacred Quaternary: Understanding Padas
Each Nakshatra divides into 4 Padas, mapping onto the 108 Navamsas — the mandala of destiny. Select a quarter below to see what it connotes.
The Purushartha-per-pada framework is a widely-taught convention for reading a pada's flavor, not a single named BPHS verse — treat it as a well-established interpretive lens rather than fixed scripture.
The Three Gunas
Every Nakshatra belongs to one of three temperament groups (Guna) that shape its underlying nature.
