Understanding Kaal Sarpa Dosha
What Is It?
In the Sanskrit, Kaal is time, Sarpa the serpent, Dosha an affliction — together, "the serpent of time." Classical Jyotisha describes this yoga as forming when all 7 classical grahas fall entirely within the span between Rahu and Ketu, the lunar nodes standing as the serpent's head and tail across the chart.
Complete, Partial, or Broken
Three degrees are recognized: a Purna (complete) formation holds all 7 grahas strictly within the nodes' grasp, none sharing a house with either. An Anshik (partial) formation still hems all 7, but one or more sit conjunct a node. Where even a single graha escapes the axis, the formation is considered broken — though 6 of 7 aligned is still worth an astrologer's attention.
Is It Always Inauspicious?
Not at all — popular astrology tends to overstate this yoga considerably. We've synthesized charts of real accomplishment carrying it. It marks a life of karmic intensity and hard-won lessons, not a guarantee of misfortune — the same grip, well-directed, can become a native's sharpest source of drive.
Yoga or Dosha?
Some traditions favor "Kaal Sarpa Yoga" over "Dosha" — in Jyotisha, a Yoga is simply a planetary combination, favorable or not depending on the whole chart around it. Read as a Dosha, it marks obstacles still working themselves out; read as a Yoga, concentrated energy capable of real achievement when well channeled. A complete reading tells you which is truer for a given native.

Frequently Asked Questions
In Jyotisha, this yoga forms when all 7 classical grahas — Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Budha, Guru, Shukra, and Shani — sit entirely on one side of the Rahu-Ketu axis, with the nodes standing as the serpent's head and tail across the wheel. Classical texts suggest it is far more common than most seekers assume, present in some form for roughly one in three charts we synthesize.
