Why the Navamsa Matters
The Navamsa (D9) is built by dividing each of the 12 zodiac signs into 9 equal parts of 3°20' each — 108 divisions in total across the full zodiac, the same 3°20' width as a single Nakshatra Pada. Every planet's D1 placement lands in exactly one of these 108 Navamsa positions, and classical Jyotish treats that second placement as a subtler, truer layer beneath the main chart's outer promise.
It is considered the second-most important divisional chart after the Rashi (D1) chart itself, used to examine marriage and spouse nature specifically, but also more broadly to confirm or qualify a planet's dignity — an exalted planet whose Navamsa placement is weak is read as an exaltation that won't fully deliver, while a plain D1 placement backed by a strong Navamsa carries more hidden strength than it first appears to. When a planet lands in the same sign in both its D1 and D9 chart, that special reinforcement is called Vargottama.
