Seventh House

Kalatra Bhava, the House of the Spouse, sits directly opposite the Ascendant, and classical astrology reads that geometric opposition as meaningful in itself: the Seventh House describes the 'other' who completes and challenges what the First House establishes about the self. It is the house of committed, formal partnership — marriage and formal business partnership specifically — distinct from the Fifth House's lighter romance.

'Open enemies' also belong here, paired deliberately with marriage: both are relationships entered knowingly and openly, in contrast to the Sixth House's more diffuse rivals. Public reputation and how a person is regarded once they step outside private life also fall under this house, since marriage and business partnership were classically the primary way a person's standing was tested in public.

As one of the four Kendra houses, the Seventh House carries real weight in chart analysis — its lord's condition is consulted closely in marriage timing and compatibility work, and Venus and Jupiter as its two karakas represent, respectively, attraction and the stabilizing wisdom needed to sustain a partnership past its early phase.

Membership in the Kama group (3, 7, 11) places the Seventh House's partnerships in the same category as desire and social gain generally — a reminder that Vedic astrology treats the wish for companionship as a legitimate purushartha in its own right, not merely a duty to be fulfilled.
