Sixth House

Shatru Bhava, the House of Enemies, is the first of the three Dusthana (difficult) houses (6, 8, 12) and governs disease, debt, and open conflict — the obstacles a chart must actively work through rather than simply enjoy. Its pairing with daily work and service is deliberate: classical astrology treats disciplined routine as the primary tool for managing this house's challenges.

Unlike the Eighth and Twelfth Houses, whose difficulties tend toward the hidden or internal, the Sixth House's troubles are visible and nameable — a rival, an illness, an obligation — which is precisely why it is also classified as Upachaya (a house of growth through effort): its afflictions are the kind that improve with sustained, conscious work rather than remaining fixed.

The digestive system's placement here is more than anatomical convenience. Classical thought reads digestion as a template for how the Sixth House operates generally: taking in what life presents, however difficult, extracting what is useful, and eliminating the rest — the same processing the house demands of debts, disputes, and daily grievances.

Mars and Saturn as its karakas represent two different responses to adversity: Mars's direct confrontation of a problem, and Saturn's patient, disciplined endurance of it. A well-managed Sixth House is traditionally read less as an absence of obstacles and more as the demonstrated capacity to meet them competently.
