Brihaspati holds the position of guru to the Devas themselves — not the strongest of the gods, nor the swiftest, but the one whose counsel the others depend on. Where Mercury governs information, Jupiter governs the understanding that turns information into wisdom; where Mars pushes forward without hesitation, Jupiter counsels the patience to know when advancing is not yet warranted.

The most tested episode of Brihaspati's own mythology is his marriage to Tara, whose relationship with Chandra (Moon) produced Budha (Mercury). Rather than dwelling in the injury, Brihaspati is remembered for accepting the child and raising him — a response classical commentary reads as Jupiter's defining quality in action: the capacity to locate a larger purpose inside a personal wound, rather than being consumed by it.
