VELS reads exclusively under the sidereal (Nirayana) zodiac and whole-sign houses — the same framework our chart engine uses to compute your own placements. Readers coming from tropical Western astrology should note that a planet's sign here refers to its sidereal position, which typically differs from its tropical sign by roughly 24°.

Navagraha Stotra — Mangala

धरणीगर्भसंभूतं विद्युत्कान्तिसमप्रभम्। कुमारं शक्तिहस्तं तं मंगलं प्रणमाम्यहम्॥

Dharaṇīgarbha sambhūtaṁ vidyutkānti samaprabham | Kumāraṁ śaktihastaṁ taṁ maṅgalaṁ praṇamāmyaham ||

I bow to Mars, born from Earth's womb, shining like lightning, the youthful one holding a spear in his hand.

The Divine Journey of Mangala

Mangala's birth is traditionally linked to Bhumi Devi, the Earth herself, which is why he is also called Bhauma — earth-born. Depending on the telling, he emerges from her union with Shiva's fire or with Vishnu's Varaha form, but every version keeps the same core image: energy born directly of matter, force with nowhere to go but outward into action.

If Surya is potential and Chandra is receptivity, Mangala is kinetic force — the graha through which intention becomes deed. This is the astrological logic behind Tuesday, Mangalvaar, as a traditional day to begin new undertakings: Mars energy is decisive by nature, and a well-supported Mars in a chart tends to describe someone capable of quick, committed action rather than prolonged deliberation.

As Kartikeya, commander of the devas' armies, Mangala earns his authority through valor rather than birthright — a contrast classical texts draw deliberately with the Sun's inherited authority. This is also read as the graha of siblings, particularly brothers, and of property and land disputes, its placement traditionally consulted for both fraternal relationships and matters of ownership and boundary.

Mangala rules two signs: Aries, where the energy expresses as pioneering initiative, and Scorpio, where the same force turns inward and becomes transformative rather than merely assertive. He is exalted in Capricorn — discipline giving Mars energy its most productive outlet — and debilitated in Cancer, where the emotional sensitivity of that sign is traditionally read as blunting Mars's decisiveness, though not without compensating gifts of protectiveness toward home and family.

In medical astrology Mangala governs blood, muscle tissue, and the body's heat; a poorly supported Mars is traditionally associated with inflammation, fevers, and accident-proneness, and red coral is worn specifically for its cooling, oceanic origin as a counterbalance. The Manglik (Kuja dosha) consideration in matchmaking — Mars's placement relative to certain houses being read as friction in marriage — draws on this same idea: an independent, decisive energy that can as easily protect a partnership as disrupt it, depending on how it is channeled.
