Mars (Mangal) placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house counted from the Ascendant is the classical trigger; most traditions also cross-check the same six houses counted from the Moon and from Venus, since a placement afflicting only one of the three reference points is read as milder than one afflicting all three.
