Astrological Causes
All seven classical planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn) fall on one side of the Rahu-Ketu axis — none crossing to the other side — so the entire chart is effectively "hemmed in" by the two shadow planets (chhaya grahas). Twelve named variations exist (Anant, Kulik, Vasuki, Shankhapal, Padma, Mahapadma, Takshak, Karkotak, Shankhachur, Ghatak, Vishdhar, and Sheshnag Kaal Sarp), determined by which house Rahu occupies — each carries a somewhat different life-area emphasis.

Kaal Sarp Dosh takes its name from Kaal (time/death) and Sarp (serpent) — the image of a chart's planetary energy coiled and constrained by the shadow-planet axis rather than moving freely. Rahu and Ketu are not physical bodies but the Moon's north and south lunar nodes, points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic — their influence in Vedic astrology is read as karmic rather than material, which is exactly why this dosha is grouped with karmic/ancestral formations rather than ordinary planetary afflictions.
